Caspar Chairs

Bay laurel, madrone, and leather

The first time I saw a Krenov show was the spring before I became a first year. Before I made it up the stairs to the show I saw one of the most beautiful chairs I had ever seen. Elegant curves and a regal stance. I had yet to meet the maker, Ejler, but I knew he was soon to be my instructor. These two chairs were my last two pieces at the Krenov School.

I dedicated my final works to my beloved instructors and classmates. I thank Ejler Hjorth-Westh for allowing me to make his chair and for his unwavering faith and guidance throughout the process

B.G.C

Elm, iroko, and nutmeg

I first spotted the plank of elm used in this piece unloading a shipping container in the spring of 2023. I was smitten at first sight, truly. The streaks of yellow, gosh! I had to have it. I spent the summer planning a project around the plank, a project for myself, a Board Game Cabinet, for the games I have and have yet to acquire.

Nearly every week since the pandemic started I have participated in a game night with friends across the country. It keeps me stable in an unstable world. This cabinet is dedicated to those friends, especially Will, Jaret, and Rubina, who've been playing since the start.

Mnemosyne

Pear, doussie, manzanita, and glass

Memory is important to me, when someone leaves us, it's all we have. Working these woods I was delighted to find memories of my Grandfather, James Menken, resurfacing to visit me. I think he would've loved these woods. I know I do. This piece was inspired by the work of James Krenov. The case is pear and the stand is doussie, which were two woods he often referenced in his books

Marian

Cherry, spalted maple, nutmeg, and plum

This was my first piece that I made at the Krenov School. I wanted to hone my dovetailing, round some wood, and focus on the little details that enticed me into the program. The panel, rounded from a solid piece of wood, invokes the feeling of a sail caught by a slight breeze. Dedicated to my mentor, friend, and inspiration. I miss you every day Grandma Marian.
